Trinity Street from Broadgate

Remarkably, despite the devastation only a very short while earlier, and in the very near vicinity, nearly all of the buildings in this photograph survived the ravages of the Second World War intact. Even more remarkably, they also survived the vast redevelopments of subsequent post-war decades, and still stand here in the 21st century.

The older of these two pictures was not dated, but I believe it is possibly late 1940s, maybe even early 1950s, shortly before the new Owen Owen was built (completed in 1954). Half way down Trinity Street on the right can be seen the building from which Owen Owen was temporarily continuing its trade since the destruction of the three year old department store in November 1940. In 2024 that building is home to Cash Generators.

As part of the improvements made around Coventry's city centre for our part in the 2012 Olympics, the top end of Trinity Street was pedestrianised, with new lawns being laid. Then later, in July 2023, the replica and improved Coventry Cross was re-erected in the vicinity - the overall result appearing rather pleasing in my opinion.
